Exam pattern of the Goethe Institut A1 and Telc A1

The German language A1 exam pattern is simple and easy to clear. There are 4 parts in the Goethe Institut A1 examination:

  1. Lesen (reading)
  2. Hören (listening)
  3. Schreiben (writing)
  4. Sprechen (speaking)

One must get 60% to pass the Goethe Institut A1 examination.

Let us discuss all the modules one by one:

Hören (listening):

The first module in the exam is hören. It contains 3 parts (Teile)

Total time: 20 Minutes
Total marks: 15
Teil 1 (6 marks): 6 Questions of multiple-choice questions (Dialog)
Teil 2 (4 marks): 4 questions of True-False (Announcements)
Teil 3 (5 marks): 5 Questions of multiple-choice questions (Monolog)

Teil 1:

You listen to 6 small texts. Every text has one question with 3 options: A, B, and C. After listening to the texts, you select the right option for every question. You listen to these texts 2 times.

Teil 2:

You listen to 4 announcements. Every announcement has one statement, thus in total 4 statements. Every statement has 2 options: True and False. After listening to the texts, you select the right option for every statement. You listen to these announcements only once.

Teil 3:

You listen to 5 monologues (one-sided telephonic conversation).  Every monologue has one question; thus, in total, 5 questions. Every question has 3 options: a, b, and c. After listening to these monologues, you select the right option for every question. You will listen to these monologues 2 times.

Lesen (reading):

Total time: 45 Minutes
Total marks: 15
Teil 1 (5 marks): reading and understanding emails
Teil 2 (5 marks): reading and understanding advertisements.
Teil 3 (5 marks): reading sign boards.

Teil 1 (5 marks):

You read two emails. The first mail has 2 questions, and the second mail has 3 questions. Every question has 2 options: True and False. You read the signboards and cross out the right answer.

Teil 2 (5 marks):

There will be 5 questions with a purpose. Every question has two screenshots of two websites (website A and website B). You have to understand the purpose and select the right website (website A or website B) accordingly.

Teil 3 (5 marks):

You read 5 signboards. Every sign board has one question with 2 options: True and False. You read the signboards and cross out the right answer.

Schreiben (writing):

Total time: 20 Minutes
Total marks: 15
Teil 1 (5 marks): filling form
Teil 2 (10 marks): writing one formal or informal email.

Teil 1 (5 marks): In this question, you will be given some information about a person, and based on this information, you need to fill out a form on his or her behalf.  There will be 5 blanks in the form, and you need to read the given information and fill out these 5 blanks.

Teil 2 (10 marks): You write a formal or an informal email and answer to 3 points given in the question. Around 30 words.

Sprechen (speaking):

Total time: 15 Minutes
Total marks: 15
Teil 1 (3 marks): self-introduction, spelling, and numbers
Teil 2 (6 marks): asking questions
Teil 3 (6 marks): asking/requesting for something

Teil 1 (3 marks): Introduction, knowledge of the German alphabet, and German numbers.

In part 1, you have to:

  • Give your introduction
  • The examiner will ask you to spell some basic words, for example, your first name, your last name, etc.
  • The examiner will ask you for your mobile number, Pincode or some other number.

Teil 2 (6 marks): W-Questions (who, why, what, etc.)

There are two rounds in the part. In each round, there will be 6 cards and 4 participants  (including you). Every round has a theme (for example, school, friends, eating and drinking, etc).

Examine all 6 cards upside down on the table, and every student takes one card. Every card has a word. The student has to make one W-Question using that word on the card and the theme. The next person has to answer that question, and the chain goes on.

In the second round, there will be six new 6 cards with a new theme, and the round goes on as the first round.

Teil 3 (6 marks): Request questions ( for example Could you please pass the water bottle? or May I use your computer? etc)

There are two rounds in the part. In each round, there will be 6 cards and 4 participants  (including you).

The examiner places all 6 cards upside down on the table, and every student takes one card. Every card has an image (for example glass, a mobile, etc.) on it. The student has to make one request question using the name of the image on the card.  The next person has to answer that question with yes or no, and the chain goes on.

In the second round, there will be new 6 cards with new images, and the round goes so on as the first round.
