Modal verbs
In this blog, we will understand the Modal verbs and their usage in the German language.
Now, modal verbs are not new to the English, Hindi, or Punjabi languages. We already use modal verbs in our day-to-day language.
In the German language, there are 6 modal verbs.
- können
- müssen
- wollen
- mögen (We will also understand möchten)
- sollen
- dürfen
Now, we will examine each of these modal verbs individually.
1. können
We use können to express our ability to do something.
For example:
- Ich kann Auto fahren.
I can drive car.
मैं कार चला सकता / सकती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ / ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich kann kochen.
I can cook.
मैं खाना बना सकता / सकती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਸਕਦਾ / ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.
I can speak German.
मैं जर्मन बोल सकता / सकती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ / ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
Conjugation of können:
- ich kann
- du kannst
- er/es/sie kann
- Wir können
- ihr könnt
- Sie/sie können
2. wollen
We use wollen to express our wish or will to do something.
For example:
- Ich will Auto fahren.
I want to drive car.
मैं कार चलाना चाहता / चाहती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich will kochen.
I want to cook.
मैं खाना पकाना चाहता / चाहती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich will Deutsch sprechen.
I want to speak German.
मैं जर्मन बोलना चाहता / चाहती हूँ।
ਮੈਂ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
Conjugation of wollen:
- ich will
- du willst
- er/es/sie will
- wir wollen
- ihr wollt
- Sie/sie wollen
3. müssen
We use müssen to express necessity or obligation to do something.
For example:
- Ich muss Auto fahren.
I must drive car.
मुझे गाड़ी चलानी पड़ेगी। /मुझे गाड़ी चलानी है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੱਡੀ ਚਲਾਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। - Ich muss kochen.
I must cook.
मुझे खाना बनाना पड़ेगा। / मुझे खाना बनाना है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ। - Ich muss Deutsch sprechen.
I must speak German.
मुझे जर्मन बोलनी पड़ेगी। / मुझे जर्मन बोलनी है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ।
Conjugation of müssen:
- ich muss
- du musst
- er/es/sie muss
- wir müssen
- ihr müsst
- Sie/sie müssen
4(a). mögen
We use mögen to express our liking to do something.
For example:
- Ich mag Auto fahren.
I like driving a car.
मुझे कार चलाना पसंद है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਉਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ। - Ich mag kochen.
I like cooking.
मुझे खाना बनाना पसंद है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ। - Ich mag Deutsch sprechen.
I like speaking German.
मुझे जर्मन बोलना पसंद है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ।
Conjugation of mögen:
- ich mag
- du magst
- er/es/sie mag
- wir mögen
- ihr mögt
- Sie/sie mögen
4(b). möchten
We use möchten to express our polite request or wish to do something.
For example:
- Ich möchte Auto fahren.
I would like to drive a car.
मैं कार चलाना चाहूंगा / चाहूंगी।
ਮੈਂ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich möchte kochen.
I would like to cook.
मैं खाना बनाना चाहूंगा / चाहूंगी।
ਮੈਂ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। - Ich möchte Deutsch sprechen.
I would like to speak German.
मैं जर्मन बोलना चाहूंगा / चाहूंगी।
ਮੈਂ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ / ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ।
Conjugation of möchten:
- ich möchte
- du möchtest
- er/es/sie möchte
- wir möchten
- ihr möchtet
- Sie/sie möchten
5. sollen
We use sollen to express our duty or necessity to do something.
For example:
- Ich soll Auto fahren.
I am supposed to drive a car. / I should drive a car.
मुझे कार चलानी चाहिए।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। - Ich soll kochen.
I am supposed to cook. / I should cook.
मुझे खाना बनाना चाहिए।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। - Ich soll Deutsch sprechen.
I am supposed to speak German. / I should speak German.
मुझे जर्मन बोलना चाहिए।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Conjugation of sollen:
- ich soll
- du sollst
- er/es/sie soll
- wir sollen

6. dürfen
We use dürfen to express permission to do something.
For example:
- Ich darf Auto fahren.
I am allowed to drive a car.
मुझे कार चलाने की अनुमति है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ। - Ich darf kochen.
I am allowed to cook.
मुझे खाना बनाने की अनुमति है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ। - Ich darf Deutsch sprechen.
I am allowed to speak German.
मुझे जर्मन बोलने की अनुमति है।
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਰਮਨ ਬੋਲਣ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਹੈ।
