das -chen, -lein, -ment, -um, -tum

Important Exceptions

German has many exceptions. For example:

  • das Mädchen (girl) → neuter because of -chen
  • das Herz (heart) → neuter
  • der Name (name) → masculine despite ending in -e
  • die Butter (butter) → feminine

Therefore, the best strategy is always to learn a noun together with its article:

der Tisch (table)
die Lampe (lamp)
das Fenster (window)

Golden Rule

Never learn just the noun.

❌ Tisch
❌ Lampe
❌ Fenster

Always learn:

der Tisch
die Lampe
das Fenster

This is the fastest way to master German articles.
