Asking questions is one of the most important skills at A1 level. In German, there are two basic types of questions:
- Ja-/Nein-Fragen – Yes/No questions
- W-Fragen – W-questions / information questions
W-Fragen begin with a question word such as wer, wo, wann, warum etc.
1. Ja-/Nein-Fragen – Yes/No Questions
A Ja-/Nein-Frage can normally be answered with ja or nein.
English: Yes/No question
Hindi: हाँ/नहीं वाला प्रश्न
Punjabi: ਹਾਂ/ਨਹੀਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਵਾਲ

2. W-Fragen – Information Questions
W-Fragen ask for specific information.
Hindi: जानकारी वाले प्रश्न
Punjabi: ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਵਾਲ
Basic structure
W-word + Verb + Subject + … ?
For example:
Wo wohnst du?
- Wo = question word
- wohnst = verb
- du = subject
Where do you live?

3. Wer – Who?
wer = who
Hindi: कौन
Punjabi: ਕੌਣ
We use wer when we ask about a person who is the subject of the sentence.

Wer bist du?
Who are you?

Wer kommt heute?
Who is coming today?

4. Wen – Whom?
wen = whom / who
Hindi: किसे / किसको
Punjabi: ਕਿਸਨੂੰ
wen is the Akkusativ form of wer.
We use wen when the person is the direct object of the verb.

Whom do you see?

5. Für wen – For whom?
für wen = for whom
Hindi: किसके लिए
Punjabi: ਕਿਸ ਲਈ
für always takes the Akkusativ, so we use wen:
für + wen = für wen

6. Mit wem – With whom?
mit wem = with whom
Hindi: किसके साथ
Punjabi: ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ
mit always takes the Dativ, so we use wem:
mit + wem = mit wem

7. Wo – Where?

wo asks about a location.

8. Woher – Where from?
woher = where from
Hindi: कहाँ से
Punjabi: ਕਿੱਥੋਂ
We use woher to ask about origin or starting point.
Examples
Woher kommst du?
Where are you from?
तुम कहाँ से हो?

9. Wohin – Where to?
wohin = where to
Hindi: कहाँ / कहाँ को
Punjabi: ਕਿੱਥੇ / ਕਿੱਥੇ ਨੂੰ
We use wohin to ask about a destination or direction.

Where are you going?
तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो?

Where are you travelling to?

10. Wann – When?

Hindi: कब
Punjabi: ਕਦੋਂ
We use wann to ask about a specific time.

11. Seit wann – Since when?
seit wann = since when
Hindi: कब से
Punjabi: ਕਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ
We use seit wann when something started in the past and continues until now.

Seit wann lernst du Deutsch?
Since when have you been learning German?
तुम कब से जर्मन सीख रहे हो?

12. Von wann bis wann – From when until when?
von wann bis wann = from when until when
Hindi: कब से कब तक
Punjabi: ਕਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ
We use this question to ask about a period of time.
Examples
Von wann bis wann arbeitest du?
From when until when do you work?
तुम कब से कब तक काम करते हो?
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ?

13. Wie lange – How long?
wie lange = how long
Hindi: कितने समय तक / कितनी देर
Punjabi: ਕਿੰਨੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ / ਕਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਰ
We use wie lange to ask about duration.
Examples
Wie lange bleibst du in Deutschland?
How long are you staying in Germany?
तुम जर्मनी में कितने समय तक रहोगे?

We use wie oft to ask about frequency.

Possible answers

Zweimal pro Woche. – Twice a week. – सप्ताह में दो बार। – ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਵਾਰ.
16. Warum – Why?

We use warum to ask for a reason.

Hindi: कितना / कितनी
Punjabi: ਕਿੰਨਾ / ਕਿੰਨੀ
We generally use wie viel with uncountable things or amounts.

The form depends on the gender and number of the noun.

This word order is one of the most important structures German A1 students need to master.
