1. Das deutsche Alphabet

The German alphabet has 26 basic letters, just like the English alphabet. German also uses Ä, Ö, Ü and ß.

जर्मन भाषा में अंग्रेज़ी की तरह 26 मुख्य अक्षर होते हैं। इसके अलावा जर्मन में Ä, Ö, Ü और ß का भी प्रयोग होता है।

ਜਰਮਨ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਾਂਗ 26 ਮੁੱਖ ਅੱਖਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਜਰਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ Ä, Ö, Ü ਅਤੇ ß ਵੀ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Ä ä

Ä sounds approximately like the e in English bed.

हिन्दी में इसका उच्चारण लगभग “ए” जैसा होता है।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਲਗਭਗ “ਏ” ਵਰਗਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

• der Äpfel → apple
• Ärztin → female doctor
• spät → late

Ö ö

There is no exact equivalent of Ö in English, Hindi or Punjabi.

To pronounce it, say “e” while rounding your lips as if you were saying “o”.

हिन्दी में इसका बिल्कुल सही समान उच्चारण नहीं है। “ए” बोलते समय होंठों को “ओ” की तरह गोल करें।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਹੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। “ਏ” ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਕੱਢਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਹੋਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ “ਓ” ਵਾਂਗ ਗੋਲ ਕਰੋ।

Examples:

• öffnen → to open
• schön → beautiful
• möchten → would like

Ü ü

There is also no exact equivalent of Ü in English, Hindi or Punjabi.

Say “ee” while rounding your lips as if you were saying “oo”.

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਹੀ ਸਮਾਨ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। “ਈ” ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਹੋਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ “ਊ” ਵਾਂਗ ਗੋਲ ਕਰੋ।

Examples:

• üben → to practise
• über → over / about
• grün → green

ß – Eszett / scharfes S

ß is called Eszett or scharfes S.

It sounds like ss.

हिन्दी में इसका उच्चारण “स्स” जैसा होता है।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ “ਸਸ” ਵਰਗਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Examples:

• Straße → street
• Fußball → football
• groß → big
• heiß → hot

Important: ß is not used at the beginning of a German word.

4. Important pronunciation rules for A1

Some German letters are pronounced differently from English.

J → “y”

German J sounds like English Y.

• ja → yes
• Jahr → year
• jetzt → now

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਯ

W → “v”

German W sounds like English V.

• Wasser → water
• wo → where
• wann → when

हिन्दी: लगभग व
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਲਗਭਗ ਵ

V → usually “f”

In many German words, V sounds like F.

• Vater → father
• vier → four
• Vogel → bird

हिन्दी: फ
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਫ

But in some foreign words, V can sound like v, for example Video.

Z → “ts”

German Z sounds like ts.

• Zeit → time
• zehn → ten
• Zimmer → room

हिन्दी: त्स
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਤ੍ਸ

S at the beginning

At the beginning of many German words, S can sound like English Z.

• Sonne → sun
• sieben → seven
• sehen → to see

हिन्दी: लगभग ज़
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਲਗਭਗ ਜ਼

ß = ss

• Straße = street
• Fußball = football
• groß = big

Remember:

ß → ss

In German, you can say:

हिन्दी: इसे कैसे स्पेल करते हैं?

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ: ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਪੈਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ?

For example:

A: Wie schreibt man deinen Namen?
B: Neeraj. N – E – E – R – A – J.
